One hour north of Whangarei
, Whangaruru is a harbour that boats spectacular beaches against a verdant backdrop of flora and fauna and breathtaking coastline. The harbour is said to have been named by Puhimoanariki who was sailing up the coast at the time, looking for shelter. The task took him a long time and upon his discovery, he christened the harbour “Whangaruru”. Whanga means ‘to wait’ and ruru ‘to shelter’. Known for its beautiful natural surroundings, Whangaruru is an excellent place to rest and relax. Popular activities here include fishing, kayaking, boating, bushwalks, swimming and picnicking.
