Whakapapa Travel Guide

Whakapapa accommodation, Whakapapa activities and attractions, Whakapapa maps, transportation to and around Whakapapa - the Jasons Whakapapa Destination Travel Guide is your complete visitor guide for Whakapapa.

Tackling the Tongariro Whakapapa Village sits at the foot of Mount Ruapehu, the North Island's highest peak (2797m) and the most active of the Central Plateau's volcanoes. It lies at the heart of the vast Tongariro National Park, a Dual World Heritage Area listed for its unique cultural values and scenery.

The most popular activities here are hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter, but there are also opportunities for horse riding, whitewater rafting, flightseeing, canoeing and mountaineering. Ruapehu has two main skifields - Whakapapa above the village, and Turoa, which is accessed from the nearby resort town of Ohakune
