Blackball Travel Guide

Blackball is the birthplace of New Zealand's reigning political power, the Labour Party. Located 25km northeast of Greymouth, this historic goldmining town was founded in 1864 by gold miners and today is famous for its historic pub. At the peak of its gold rush days, 1200 people called it home, but today the population is about 450. Recreational facilities include swimming pools, tennis courts, football and cricket grounds.

Attractions:
  • Formerly the Blackball Hilton
    This historic West Coast pub is famous for its hospitality and character. It was taken on by the giant Hilton company, which banned it from using its original name.
  • Blackball Salami Company Ltd
    Naturally cured and smoked venison and traditional Italian salami.
  • Brunner Industrial Site
    This historic site includes a collection of old brickworks and coke ovens.
  • Croesus Track
    This old route to the gold diggings departs from the town and offers walks of varying lengths through this historic goldmining area. Tracks lead to the sites of the former Minerva Battery, Perotti's Mill, Croesus Battery and the Garden Gully Hut and Battery.
