West Coast

'The Coast' is known for its friendly, laid back life style…
  • Visiting the West Coast is like stepping back in time to a world of lush rainforest, imposing rugged mountains, crystal clear lakes and massive glaciers laying claim to the landscape.
  • The Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are a magnificent sight at high tide. Made of heavily eroded ‘panckaed’ limestone with vertical blowholes, there are tracks all around them - some are even wheelchair suitable.
  • Westport, Reefton, Greymouth are all mining towns and are all interesting in their own right. So too is Hokitika – home of the infamous Hokitika Wild Foods Festival every March.
  • Franz Josef & Fox Glacier are obvious draw cards on the Coast. Why not stay a few days and explore? There are scenic flights, tramping tracks and local guides to teach you all about them.
There is a wide range of accommodation options throughout the West Coast including motels, holiday parks and camping grounds and self–serviced apartments and cottages. The West Coast also has some of the finest hotels, luxury accommodation and resorts in the country, as well as boutique Bed & Breakfasts (B&B). If you’re on a budget and like to keep it social – there are many backpackers and hostels dotted all over the region.
