Ted Guise from Wellington Movie Tours spends his days showing people around Wellington, so he's the perfect person to share the capital's highlights.
"I’ve seen a lot of Wellington over the years, and it always amazes me just how many great things there are to see and do in our little capital – many of them free!"
Te Papa – This place is amazing! If you want to learn all about New Zealand – the land, people, animals, birds, sea-life – this is a must see. No kidding, you can spend a whole day here and it's free entry.
Weta Cave – Visit the little museum/shop at award-winning special FX company Weta Workshop. Learn about the magicians who bought us Lord of the Rings and many more great films. Oh, and take your camera to have a picture posing with Lurtz and Gollum. Entry is free and there’s an assortment of merchandise to purchase.
Courtenay Place – If you’re looking for entertainment and a bite out, start at Courtenay Place. There are heaps of bars, restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and cinemas here and down the streets off Courtenay Place, and you can carry on along Cuba Street and the waterfront.
Museum of Wellington City and Sea – Learn about the history of New Zealand's little capital. At the Museum there are three stories of exhibits showcasing Wellington’s social, cultural and maritime history. This is a short walk along the waterfront from Te Papa and like Te Papa, entry is free.
Botanic Gardens – Take the cable-car up to the Botanic Gardens. At the top, not only will you have fantastic views over the city, but nearby is the free-entry Cable Car Museum and Carter Observatory, and a short walk takes you into the gardens. Take your time walking through 25 hectares of park including the famous Lady Norwood Rose Garden and Begonia House. Again, entry to the Gardens is free.
