Peter Ellison, GM of Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferries, shares his favourite spots for a capital photo opportunity.
"Wellington has so many stunning views it’s hard to narrow them down, but here are just some of the ones you shouldn’t miss."
Mount Victoria Lookout – Any true Wellingtonian would recommend a drive up to Mount Victoria to look out over the whole city and take in some of the best panoramic views of Wellington. From here, you can also watch the planes fly into the airport and see the ferries entering the harbour.
Upland Road Lookout – The view from the top of Kelburn looking over the harbour to the Hutt Valley, Mount Victoria and Oriental Parade is stunning. The best way to reach the lookout point, where the Carter Observatory is also located, is to catch Wellington’s cable car from Lambton Quay in the city centre or walk through the botanic gardens.
South Coast - Take a drive along Wellington’s rugged South coast beach, around red rocks and the bays, to see New Zealand’s native fur seals. If you time it right, it’s a great opportunity to watch the Bluebridge Ferry coming in or out of the Wellington harbour off the Cook Strait.
Brooklyn Wind Turbine - Another photo op not to be missed is the Brooklyn Wind Turbine, where you can see more stunning views of the city, harbour, Cook Strait and surrounding hills.
Petone Foreshore – If you take a drive out to the Hutt Valley, make sure you drive along the Petone foreshore and take a look back over to Wellington City. The view is beautiful, especially on a calm night, and the coloured lights from the city light up the harbour.
