Rooms were tody and good facilities, especially at the price. Restauarnt was good and food was fine. Proprieters very friendly
We selected the Black Steer Restaurant for our End of Year Christmas Dinner. We were disappointed right from the start as we learnt it was a BYO wine and beer – buggar, I was looking forward to a cold beer but had to settle for a very pricey fizzy drink. Unfortunately it continued down hill from there. We asked for our steaks to be cooked medium-well (they are a Steakhouse – surely they can’t get this wrong) Both steaks were cooked very well done. The salad wasn’t anything special – something I could’ve easily made at home. The chips were good. Don’t try the spare ribs as my workmate did not enjoy them at all. The atmosphere was poor as we were pushed out into a little side room because the main dining room was booked for a large group. We wont be returning back to the Black Steer Restaurant and my advice would be to go somewhere else.
Word of caution: After posting my comments the owners phone me and verbally attacked me about my comments. If you are posting, leave it for a few days.
We were totally dumbfounded when we saw this review., we pride ourselfs in our cleanliness and quality of our food. As every one of our patrons are repeat customers, some are weekly since we have opened Black Steer Steakhouse 3 months ago. This patron Mark from Quantem Education in Wanganui was quite satisified upon leaving, when he was asked the the manager if every was ok, and all their replys were good. So it is with great dissapointment that we find this review, as it contary to his commemts the night before. His booking was actually for the 21st and not the 20th, they brought their booking forward , and we explained that we had a large group of 25 people that had booked a month and half ago and we went out of our way to accomodate them.. This was quite fine with them as was also the B.Y.O which was explained to them on the phone when they phoned to change their booking date, It is also well signed as you enter the restaurant, and has been advertised in the press. Our chef too was dumfounded by this comment. We have since contacted ALL the other patrons who ate with us on the night to see if anyone else had any problems, and NOT ONE had a complaint, only compliments. Not one of the 25 people who had their Xmas dinner party here had any complaints. We did phone Mark to find out what the problem was to see if we could solve it, but we got only lies, we did not at any stage verbally abuse him as that is not what we are about. The part of the restaurant that we have them is our most popular as this leads to our outdoor area. Our chef is one of New Zealands top chefs, having worked and owned some of New Zealands top restaurants, and our chef takes pride in all he does.
Nothing spectacular, but affordable and good location. Would definitely stay here again
