Overview

Set in park-like grounds overlooking the Bay of Islands, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is New Zealand’s most historic site where, in 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between Maori chiefs and the British Crown. Discover our Birthplace – Te Pitowhenua: * Join us on an Embrace guided tour and walk in the footsteps of our ancestors. * Be amazed by Ngatokimatawhaorua, the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe. * Step inside the Treaty House and learn about the treasures within. * Visit Te Whare Runanga, the unique carved Maori meeting house. * Experience Maori cultural performances and the excitement of the haka. Let our enthusiastic staff create a memorable visit for you at Waitangi. Summer activities on the Treaty Grounds also include garden and nature tours, flax weaving workshops, the evocative Mists of Time cultural performance and our special twilight show, Land of Plenty which includes optional dinner packages. Quality gift shopping and refreshments are available on site.
