Waipu CoveA proud Scottish history and superb surfing characterise the little town of Waipu and its nearby beach, Waipu Cove. Five shiploads of Scottish immigrants arrived at Waipu during the 1850s, and visitors can discover their history and genealogy at the Auckland & Northland Route PlannerWaipu Museum.

An estuary near the mouth of the Waipu River is good for birdwatching, with many waders including the NZ dotterel, oyster catchers and fairy terns. Other activities include abseiling, climbing and dolphin and whalewatching. The Waipu Golf Club, which has an 18-hole course, also welcomes visitors.
