Waihi township is Waihi Beach, an 8km stretch of ocean beach popular with holidaymakers and surfers. At the north end of the beach a track traverses the headland to Orakawa Bay, a scenic spot fringed by pohutukawa trees. At the southern end of Waihi Beach is the historic settlement of Bowentown, while to the south-west is Karangahake Gorge and the lovely Owharoa Falls. A walkway through the gorge is a popular way to explore the area.
