At its doorstep, Tuatapere has one of New Zealand's best hiking areas - the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track. This is New Zealand's newest track and has quickly established itself as a "must-do" walk. This 53km wilderness experience passes through a stunning display of New Zealand scenery, including the Waitutu coastal marine terraces, podocarp beech forest and sandstone outcrops. The native bush is beautiful and you will be surrounded by birdlife.
Tuatapere is an hour west of
Invercargill and is the perfect place to base yourself to explore this unique area. Captain Cook first came here in 1770 to stock up on supplies. By 1900 there were flaxmills and sawmills operating the region. Forestry and farming are still important industries.
