  • Lake Taupo
    New Zealand's largest lake, covering an area of 619sq km, and famous for its trout fishing. Daily cruises are available, taking in the Maori Rock Carvings, Whakaipo Bay and the lake's scenery.

    Taupo is best known for its trout fly fishing, and fishing guides and charters can be booked at the visitor centre. A licence is required.

  • Huka Falls

  • Wairakei Natural Thermal Valley
    Located 10km north of Taupo, this thermal valley contains hot springs, steam vents and coloured mud pools tinted by various minerals.
  • Volcanic Activity Centre
    Located within Wairakei Thermal Valley, the centre features films, seismographs and interactive displays on volcanoes and earthquakes.
  • Huka Prawn Park
    The world's only geothermal prawn farm is part of Wairakei Thermal Valley. Open daily all year round.
  • Craters of the Moon
    A striking thermal area named for its lunar-like landscape, located about 5km north of Taupo.
  • Aratiatia Rapids
    Located 12 kilometres north-east of Taupo, the Waikato River falls 28 metres in the course of 1 kilometre, creating these scenic rapids. There is a 142 hectare reserve along the shores of Lake Aratiatia.  Rapids Jet offer jetboating tours.
  • Orakei Korako
    Located 37km north of Taupo, Orakei Korako is one of New Zealand's finest thermal areas, famous for its coloured silica terraces, geysers, hot pools and Ruatapu Cave. The white-rimmed pools were once used as mirrors by local Maori.
  • Taupo Hot Springs
    Hot pools, spa, private pools, massage and water slide. Open daily 7am-9.30pm.
  • Tongariro River
    One of the most noted rivers in New Zealand for trout fishing and rafting. Operators include Rapid Sensations Rafting and Tongariro River Rafting.
