Egmont National Park

The cone-shaped volcano Mt Taranaki is the centrepiece of this park, which encompasses sub-alpine shrublands, huge lava bluffs, waterfalls and, in the lower regions, wetlands and dense forests.

Walking and hiking tracks range from half hour excursions to multi-day expeditions; climbing the steep upper slopes requires good equipment and expertise. Climbing guides are available.  There is a small skifield in the park and two visitor centres, at North Egmont and Dawson Falls.
