Jaimee Blythe from Gore i-SITE Visitor Centre has the low down on where to buy all your gourmet goods.
Hokonui Moonshine Museum - This place has the yummiest homemade whiskey liqueur chocolates. It's also an interesting museum to explore, with some very colourful tales about our early Southland ‘moonshiners’ (Scots, who loved their whiskey!). It's housed in the Hokonui Heritage Centre at 16 Hokonui Drive, in Gore.
Gore Farmers Market - This is definitely the place to sample some of the delicious fresh produce – mostly organic – that's grown and made by our awesome locals. My favorite thing about the market is when you enter the market and you see small children with their noses push hard up against Mary Anne Henderson cupcake stand drawling over which of the passionately made mini cupcakes they can convince their parents to buy for them. The cupcakes have colours and decorations so bright on them they just scream EAT ME. So yummy. The market is open on the first and third Saturday of the month at the Old Horse Bazaar, Mersey Street, from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
Gore May - If you're a foodie at heart, then you really need to stop by Gore May on Irk Street. It stocks Prenzel products, Zarbo products, gluten free products, specialty chocolates and heaps of other gourmet goodies.
Retro Organics - Retro Organics has the most orgasmic ice cream and an amazing range of handcrafted organic cheeses. Try the Hokonui Halloumi or Colac Bay cumin feta. It's just a short drive from Gore on the Mataura-Wyndham Road at Tuturau.
Waikaia Commercial Hotel - It's not a shop as such, but the hotel's Monstrous Switzers Burger and beer battered chips are definitely a personal favourite.
We'd love to hear about your top choices. Tell us all about it now!
