Jaimee Blythe from Gore i-SITE Visitor Centre tells us where to go for some insights into the history and heritage that is uniquely Southland's.
Hokonui Heritage Centre - the centre has an historical museum with displays on fishing and colonial costumes, and of course, the moonshine museum, where you can buy Old Hokonui whisky, made to an original local recipe. It's at 16 Hokonui Drive, Gore. Small Charge for the Moonshine side of things. Gore Historical Side is free.
Eastern Southland Art Gallery - our local gallery has been nicknamed the 'Goreggenheim' by Saatchi & Saatchi boss Kevin Roberts. It has the famous John Money and Ralph Hotere collections, and these works are not shown anywhere else in New Zealand. It's at 14 Hokonui Drive, next door to the Gore Heritage Centre.
Mandeville Air Craft Museum - I love the old planes like the Tiger Moth, Fox Moth, Dragonfly, Dominie/Rapide and, of course, there is one of the original Kingston Flyers there as well – always a worth a look. It's located at Mandeville Airfield, on State Highway 94, just out of Gore. There is a small charge here as well – By donation
We know there are only 3 and we'd love you to add to the list, join us on Facebook to have a discussion about this or write to us here
