"There's so much to do in Southland and with the Southern Scenic Route on its doorstep, most of this won't hurt your wallet too much either! Here are some of the places we tell our guests to visit:" - David O'Brien and Sue Stewart, owners of the Birchwood Manor Motel
Cosy Nook – On the Southern Scenic Route near Colac Bay, this small historic fishing village is great for a quiet stroll.
Rakatu Wetlands – If you're slightly more adventurous and want to see some of New Zealand's native birdlife, then Rakatu Wetlands is the place for you. The Rakatu Wetlands are located on the Southern Scenic Route, between Tuatapere and Manapouri.
Orepuki Gemstone Beach – A beautiful spot where you can find ‘gems’ on the beach, and ride some of the best surf New Zealand has to offer – although I might recommend a wetsuit in the winter! Gemstone Beach is accessed directly off the Southern Scenic Route just West of Orepuki (towards Tuatapere).
Borland Lodge – There's great walking and mountain biking in this peaceful spot just off the Southern Scenic Route, between Lake Manapouri and Lake Monowai. The historic Monowai Power Station is a few minutes drive away, and Borland Road takes you up to Borland Saddle for incredible views over Fiordland National Park.
Tuatapere Golf Course – OK, so it's not free, but at $10 a round, it certainly feels like it... so how could you miss going out on such an amazing golf course! Tuatapere Golf Course is on Clifden Road.
We'd love to hear about your top choices. Tell us all about it now!
