Overview

Experience volcanic craters, two of the world’s largest hot springs, panoramic views and walks through a glorious natural setting. Waimangu is the Rotorua destination no-one should miss! Created from the devastating 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption, Waimangu is the world’s newest geothermal system, the only one created within written history and the only one wholly created directly from a volcanic eruption.

Frying Pan and Inferno Crater lakes, mysteriously linked, draw visitors from around the globe. Walking and hiking trails and tours for all ages and fitness levels lead through New Zealand bush to volcanic craters, newly forming silica terraces, unique thermal plants and steaming hot waters. Enjoy the walks, a cruise on private Lake Rotomahana with live commentary, or combine the two.

We offer a selection of tours for groups of 10 or more.

Waimangu Volcanic Valley is a multiple New Zealand Eco-Tourism Award winner. Open every day 08.30am-5pm.

"An intimate look at NZ’s geothermal beauty." This was given a review of 5 stars (Excellent)

We hit two parks in the area, and Waimangu was our favorite, hands-down. It was extremely quiet and off the beaten path, allowing us to experience the splendor at our own pace and without the distraction of crowds. The walk was rolling and easy, with only a few spots requiring a bit of huff and puff, and views well worth the exertion. It was void of excess signage and barricades, which made for a more intimate view of the wide range of thermal activity – blowholes, hot lakes, brilliantly-colored ponds, and steaming streams – and a better opportunity for snapping incredible photos. A stunning, serene, up-close look at NZ’s geothermal beauty without the crowds.
