Overview

Thousands of years in the making, explore spectacular nature at New Zealand's most colourful natural volcanic area. Walk at your own pace past the unique volcanic features which include the Champagne Pool, hot springs, bubbling mud, steaming ground, expansive vistas, huge volcanic craters and sinter terrace formations. The natural bush setting adds another dimension to the experience as does the daily eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser at 10.15am to heights of up to 20 metres.

"Stunning, but a tad crowded." This was given a review of 4 stars (Good)

Of the two parks we hit in this region, Wai-O-Tapu was the most shocking, striking, and impressive. The array of sights was very wide, ranging from neon yellow ponds to pools so steamy and rich with smell (actually, stink!) we could not see across to the other side. It really was stunning to all of the senses. It was obviously one of the more popular parks however, so it was quite dense with people – to be expected. If you’re looking for a more intimate experience, we highly recommend Waimangu Volcanic Valley, which was much quieter and natural. That said, we were certainly glad to have visited both and greatly appreciated each for what it offered.
