Fantastic place, lovely owners. My daughter loved this place and the owner was very nice to offer my daughter a ride on the ponies. Only shame is, tourists were few due to the recent earthquakes at Christchurch!

"Attitude" This was given a review of 1 star (Poor)

Upon arriving the 5 of us were handed 4 muffins and asked: "One of you can do without can't you?"

Beds were lumpy, rooms were frigid along with the attitude of our hostess.

We were asked where our 5 year old would sleep even though the room had 6 beds and additional linens for more.

Internet did not work, breakfast costs extra (we declined against paying $6.50 for wheatbix)

Hello Larz, thank you very much for reviewing me. I am absolutely horrified to find you had so many wee things go towards making your stay a concern. Please allow me to address them. Re- About the muffins-I was a little embarrassed to point out- we give our family unit guest, a basket of 4 muffins, as a ‘Kiwi offering of welcome. I was happy to add one for your party but old ‘butter fingers’ (me) dropped a couple earlier on, and therefore had none of our daily baked muffins left. The comment was made as joke after explaining the situation. I am so sorry if this was offensive to you. Our Kiwi friendliness can be taken for over-familiarity, I guess? Regards the heating'; we have 4 heaters in the rooms and electric blankets on all beds because we love our guests to be cosy!! So sorry Larz you might not have realized they need to be turned on at the wall. In regards to your child’s sleeping arrangements-I’m sorry I understood from what you said, that you already had something for her or he and it wouldn’t be a problem, I’m so sorry, if I had only known. Regards the beds – 98% of our customers love them as they are cosy, firm, orthopedic and only two years old. Yes our breakfast is $6.50 per person and consists of fruit Juice, 4 cereals (one of which is weetbix), tinned fruit, bread selections and lovely jams and spreads, and sometimes lovely fresh hot muffins. Many accommodation providers in Rotorua charge between $8.50 – $12 per person, so $6.50 per person is a very reasonable price and I am really proud of my wee breakfast dining room, overlooking my children’s farm. I think I should have taken you into the breakfast room, to show you, as this might have helped with any confusion, my apologies for that. I wished you had come to the office and told me you had a problem with the internet which is generally fantastic – I could have so easily accommodated you in our office area. I do hope that your move from Alaska to New Zealand goes well, and if you and your lovely family are ever in Rotorua please feel free to pop on in and say Kia-Ora (hello).... it was lovely to meet you all, have a great year!! For all the beautiful people from New Zealand and around the world- i do encourage you to read all my other reviews including (trip advisor as well), and make up your own mind. Love and happy travelling -Karen

"Clean, modern, quiet unit. Fantastic place for kids - farm animals and best ever playground" This was given a review of 4 stars (Good)

Fantastic place, our 2yr & 4 yr old boys loved it. An 'out of this world' playground, every kids dream - 2 tree huts with connecting metal tunnels, speedboat, swings, fences to climb over etc etc. Lots of safe areas for kids to run of excess energy. Friendly farm animals too.

Inside, our unit was extremely clean and modern. Great cooking facilities including a non stick electric frypan and full oven. I loved the fact that the fridge/freezer was a decent size.

Chocolate muffins just added to the experience. We will definitely be back.

Well what can I say, the lodge was tidy, quiet and just what we wanted. Was a shame we didnt have our kids with us as the playground was lovely. It was also nice to see the animals, very family orientated place. The host was lovely and friendly. Would definately reccommend to all families.

This is a wonderful secluded spot with loads to do for young children- lots of friendly animals, an adventure playground and mini golf. The rooms are good sized with excellent facilities and good value. The owner was welcoming and extremely helpful regarding the best sights of Rotorua. There is no sulphur smell at the Lodge and we even had fresh baked muffins on arrival. A great place!

Our toddler had a wonderful time visiting the animals several times a day, and watching the neighbours digger. Simple accomodation that made a family holiday very affordable. Showers were awesome. Only downside was the 14inch tv...could have done with a few more inches.

"A Simply Delightful Stay" This was given a review of 5 stars (Excellent)

My family and I (5 of us) stayed at quite a few motels in different areas of the North Island (Auckland, Hamilton, Taupo & Rotorua) throughout our 10-day trip. Unanimously, our 2 nights spent at the Rotorua Hideaway Lodge was voted the best.

Nestled in a quiet location just off the main road, we were first greeted by 2 curious ponies and a mooing cow as we drove up to the reception cabin. Karen, our host and a true-blue Rotorua resident, gave us a warm welcome and got down to the business of introducing the area's attractions depending on our fancy. No other host we encountered in other motels bothered to do that. Karen is a lovely chatty person and we certainly learned a bit of the Kiwi culture from her ... although it did take us a while to get used to the accent.

After checking in, we were further delighted when Karen appeared on our door with a welcoming basket of deliciously yummy chocolate muffins. I’m not one for desserts but this was particularly good! On the accommodation itself, the rooms were clean and comfortable but nothing exceptional. The kitchenette was well equipped and the larger than average fridge was something we certainly appreciated given the amount of food we bought.

Across from the apartments are the paddocks which house the said 2 ponies, the cow, a pig, some sheep and one smiley looking alpaca. Guests are welcome to visit and pet the animals. We city folks don’t come into contact with farm animals much so this was cause of much fascination for us. I went out to snap photos of the animals one early morning and got splattered with snot from one sneezy sheep. In addition to the farm animals, Karen also has 2 very very friendly Dalmations and some 3 or 4 cats. The dogs formed a welcoming committee on our first night and wouldn’t leave until at least 3 of us petted them. They seem to have some friendly competition going on who could jump on the humans and lick their faces the most! First thing the next morning they were back to say Good Morning. I must say, we certainly missed them after we left Rotorua.

So the verdict? It’s not The Four Seasons or The Ritz Carlton but if you’re not neurotic about having snazzy-jazzy 5-star hotel treatment all the time, I say put away those Jimmy Choos and treat yourself to some back-to-basics good old-fashioned farmland warmth and hospitality. The Rotorua Hideaway Lodge – that’s where you’ll find it.

"Family getaway in Rotorua NZ" This was given a review of 4 stars (Good)

The Rotorua Hideaway lodge is a perfect place especially for those travelling with toddlers. Each room is privately located overlooking a row of beautiful pine trees and a mini farm complete with REAL ponies and playground for the wee one to blow off steam! The room is immacutely designed complete with oven stove and cooking utensils, pots and pans.. you name it! Our only regret was not staying there longer as we only stayed there for one night!

Although we would like to point out here that there was a slight mix-up regarding the price of our room in which Jason gave us $95 for 4 people when it was supposed to be $120/4 pax. However, it was all sorted out upon arrival. In any case, $120 for 4 people is a good price for this place! Please double check with your accommodation about the actual price of your stay before travelling though!

The owner was incredibly helpful and friendly and the motel was the most unique and quirky spot I have ever stayed in. Everything from a boat built into a slide and a car built into a BBQ the kids had hours of fun exploring the owners artistic creations. The accomodation was spotless and perfectly situated to explore Rotorua attractions and incredibly easy to locate. We even got greeted with muffins warm from the oven for afternoon tea. All of this, with the added bonus of being the most reasonably priced motel I could find for 2 adults and 2 children. Do yourself a favour and stay here if you are visiting Rotorua.

Very friendly owners who welcomed our arrival with delicious, freshly-cooked blueberry muffins! Relatively basic but clean and functional accommodation. A real bonus that we were able to take our dog too. The owners are clearly ecologically minded with recycling bins available for each unit and a playground made entirely out of recycled materials! It's a few km out of town so really need a car or bike. We only stayed one night, but thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.

I am sorry to hear that you felt that you had a bad experience at our property, but you brought it on yourself. First of all I would like to say that you must have us confused with a different property because we only have 3 signs in our property, of which reads "WELCOME TO ROTORUA HIDEAWAY LODGE", "PLEASE RECYCLE", "ALL VISITORS MUST REPORT TO OFFICE". Yes we are very PET FRIENDLY, and we advertise this, but we also have RULES when bringing your pets along. These rules were discussed with you over the phone, and again upon your arrival, and you agreed not a problem. RULE 1. Pets must have their own bedding RULE 2. All poo to picked up RULE 3. The animal must be toilet trained RULE 4. Dogs are not allowed on any motel furnishing inside the unit, if you ignore this, then I will charge your CREDIT CARD for cleaning cost. This is done for a reason, so that NON dog people and dog people like yourself, get to experience a good relaxing time at my property. Shortly after your arrival, you went off to Experience a Maori Cultural evening for 4 HOURS, and left your two one year old labradors locked up inside my Motel unit on a hot stinking evening. They had no bedding of theirs, and this was one of the RULES I discussed with you. No water, and not much ventilation, how do I know this??, because I went inside your unit to calm them down, as they were making excessive noise. The person next door to your unit complained to me about your dog noise, and he had a dog himself. I am a animal lover, and their is no way I will stand back and watch somebody mistreat their animals like you did, think yourself lucky that I didn't call the "SPCA" on you that evening. How would you like to be locked up in a little house or car with not much ventilation or water on a hot stinking night?, I don't think so. You have no idea what your dogs were doing inside my motel unit, because you weren't there for 4 hours!! - REMEMBER!! Had you come to me after your arrival and mentioned to me that you were off to experience a Cultural evening, and is there anywhere that you can leave your dogs??. I would have found you a lovely shady place, and your dogs would have been much happier, and my guests would have had a noise FREE night. If bringing this matter to your attention and calling you a "IRRESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER" is classed as being arrogant and annoying, then I make no EXCUSE!!. You do not go away from any Motel unit and leave your dogs unattended, it is like leaving your young children unattended for 4 hours. Is it a luxury these days even to be able to bring your animals away on holiday with you, as it is really hard today to find Motels that will allow animals to stay. It is IRRESPONSIBLE dog owners like yourself who ruins it for the RESPONSIBLE dog owners. Once again, I make no excuses for letting you know that you are a IRRESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER.

"Wonderful stay at Rotorua Hideaway Lodge" This was given a review of 4 stars (Good)

The name is very appropriate. The motel is just off the main street but once you turn into the property, we felt we were in a peaceful hideout. The unit we stayed in was clean with ample cooking facilities and utensils. My kids love to run on the big field and they truly enjoyed their 2 day stay there, away from the "rotten egg" sulphur stench!

Thank you Lynn Lee, yes you are right, the name is very appropriate to the motel, we always like to think of ourselves as a well hidden oasis in the heart of Rotorua. Have a wonderful year, and hope to see you back sometime soon. From all of us here at Rotorua Hideaway Lodge.

Stayed here in September during the school holidays. Found everything to be spotless from the units to the grounds. Having the animals and a great playground for the kids made for an enjoyable weeks stay. You can sit outside to have lunch or a wine or two and still be able to watch the kids play. The hosts are very helpful and the chocolate muffins were a treat after checking in. Once again enjoyed our stay.

Good afternoon Cheryl, it was a pleasure having you stay with us, we throughly enjoyed watching your kids have lots of fun. It is pleasing to know that our playground worked so well for your children , we now have a new added feature our lovely big boat. This you can climb up onto and slide down, and the climbing frames to it all have different angles, something that the children who have been staying with us over the Xmas, New Year break have really amused themselves with. Watch out for our new website coming soon, but the boat feature will be added to it down the track, once we have painted it. Once again, pleasure having you stay, may see you back down the track sometime??

Enjoyable and relaxing friendly hosts ideal for children who are very well catered for. Clean tidy and well situated on the fringe of Rotorua off the main road.

"nice but a bit of traffic noise" This was given a review of 4 stars (Good)

There is lots of space for the kids to run around and if you have young kids you will be up early anyhow so the trucks from early morning on the highway may not bother you. The accommodation is clean and nice and the people friendly.
