No need to take a rain check here! Kay Clarke, the Managing Director of Stay and Play Rotorua Ltd, shares her top tips for rainy day fun in Rotorua.
"Rotorua can look its best on a rainy day when the steam mixes with the rain and the raindrops fall on the bubbling mud – and there’s never a shortage of things to do no matter what the weather is doing, but here are my Top 5.”
Rotorua Duck Tours – It's always lovely weather for ducks! You get to see some of Rotorua's iconic landmarks and hear about the fascinating local history, as well as taking a plunge into a couple of lakes along the way. The conductor (driver) adds to the fun with a few twisted tales and info about these military landing crafts from Second World War.
Whitewater Rafting – You're going to get wet anyway so why not go with the flow! There are several rafting options available – from a drop over a 7 metre waterfall and grade 5 rapids on the Kaituna River, to a longer river journey on the Rangitaiki, where you can relax and enjoy the scenery on the way. Wet n Wild Rafting and Kaitiaki Adventures are two of the operators who can help you take the plunge.
Rotorua Museum – There's something for everyone at the Museum and you can spend hours exploring. From the fascinating historic bathhouse relics to the cinema portrayals of yesteryear and the ever changing exhibits, the Museum encourages interaction from children, and provides a touch of nostalgia for Mums and Dads.
Haka World – This is a fun and productive way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy day. You get to hear the stories and history surrounding the famous All Black Haka, Kamate Kamate, then learn the words, their meaning and pronunciation, and practise the actions. In no time, you're ready to perform, dressed in traditional costume complete with facial moko (tattoo). It's a great photo opportunity as well.
Mamaku Blue – Enjoy feasting on a stack of Blueberry Pancakes at Mamaku Blue – Blueberry Experience. Smothered in their ‘own-grown’ blueberries, they taste even better when you know how good they are for you. You can even wash them down with a glass of Blueberry Wine or follow up with a liqueur – very yummy!
We'd love to hear about your favourite rainy day activities. Tell us all about it here.
