Budget a little tight? Kristy Verster, Ground Crew Supervisor at NZONE SKYDIVE, shares some advice on having fun for free.
"Rotorua is chock-full of fun things to do and a lot of them are free! Here are my top 5 freebie favourites for when you're next visiting our beautiful region.”
Kaituna River Walk – Take a walk along the Kaituna river walk to see Okere Falls and watch those daredevil kayakers and rafters make their way over the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world. Stop off at the unique Okere Falls store too, which has a deli and a beer garden.
Rotorua Night Market – Every Thursday in the city centre Rotorua holds a great night market selling everything from food and wine to flowers, art and jewellery. While you browse the stalls, you get entertained by various performers.
Whakarewarewa Redwood Forest – Take a walk or mountain bike through this beautiful Rotorua attraction. You can take a trip uphill and get a great panoramic view of the city or visit the Redwoods gift shop for a great range of souvenirs. Dogs are allowed on a leash and enjoy the outing as much as you will.
Lakes – Rotorua is surrounded by beautiful lakes where you can swim, have a BBQ or simply take a walk around. The water is a little chilly during winter months but the lakes are definitely still worth a visit. The viewing point over the blue and green lakes is a great spot to get a few pictures and marvel at the different colors.
Kuirau Park – Watch boiling mud and steaming pools of water coming from under the earth. Kuirau Park is absolutely free and gives you a good insight into the natural geothermal activity that makes Rotorua famous. Take your shoes off and soak your feet in the natural hot foot pools in the park – also free!
