Sitting on the edge of a beautiful harbour in the shadow of Karioi Mountain, Raglan is world famous for its surf beaches and their superb left-hand breaks. Some of the world's best surfers make a beeline for Raglan over summer, when professional competitions are held at Manu Bay. Raglan has a flourishing arts scene, and you can explore some of the local galleries and art studios on the Arts and Crafts trail. In town, you'll find some characterful cafes for lunch or coffee, or just enjoy fish and chips down on the sand.
The sheltered harbour at Raglan offers fishing, swimming, windsurfing and boating, but take care at the harbour entrance where the undercurrents can be strong. There are safe swimming beaches at nearby Cox's Bay, Puriri Park and Kopua Recreational Reserve. Walkers will find plenty of pleasant bushwalks around Raglan - some of the trails open onto wide expanses of sandy beach. For a rewarding scenic drive, take the back road to the sleepy seaside town of
Kawhia. Raglan also has a campground, golf course and museum.
