Picton is a picturesque town and is the gateway to the
Marlborough Sounds region. With its sandy beaches, secluded bays and dramatic headlands, it is also the South Island terminal for the Cook Strait ferries. There is a huge range of accommodation and many fine eateries which make the most of the region's superb seafood.
The busy Picton foreshore is home to a children's playground, a museum containing early whaling artefacts, and facilities for picnics and swimming. An old sailing ship, the
Edwin Fox, is also berthed here - the last surviving ship to carry convicts to Australia. Picton is renowned for its placid waters, ideal for rowing and speedboat regattas, waterskiing and fishing. Regular launch services allow visitors to see many of the enchanting bays in Queen Charlotte Sound, and fishing excursions are always popular. Picton accesses the beautiful Queen Charlotte Track, with its magnificent coastal views. To the south of Picton are the renowned vineyards and wineries of the
