Sitting on the southern side of
Mount Ruapehu, the country town of Ohakune is the heart of a thriving market gardening region and famous for its carrots. The ski area of
Turoa lies on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, 20km north of the town on scenic Ohakune Mountain Road. During the winter months (mid-June to November), the bars, cafés and chalets fill with skiers and the Ohakune comes into its own as a lively ski resort. During summer, holidaymakers can enjoy Ohakune's pleasant surrounding countryside, bushwalks, superb trout fishing and beautiful picnic spots.
Ohakune has a host of year-round adventure activities for thrill-seekers including hiking, horse trekking, kayaking, mountain bike riding and whitewater rafting. Ohakune is ideally situated for exploring the magnificent Whanganui and Tongariro National Parks, and a base for jetboat trips and canoe safaris on the Whanganui River.
