You’ll discover breathtaking scenery along the dramatic North Taranaki coast, with its long stretch of black sand beaches and steep cliffs. Waitara, North Taranaki’s largest town, was one of the first places settled by Maori, and has one of the oldest marae (meeting houses) in New Zealand. Enjoy the country tranquility of Inglewood, an ideal base for exploring Egmont National Park, or head along the coast and discover the coastal communities of Oakura, Urenui, Mokau and Onaero.

You’ll find a winery, gardens and galleries at Onaero, a great camping spot at Urenui and beautiful bush and coastal walks around Mokau. En route to Mokau, make sure you stop in at Ureti, where the unspoiled countryside provided a location for the filming of The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise. The city of New Plymouth has a delightful foreshore walkway and just to the south, you can stroll along the superb surf beach at Oakura.
