Devonport Things to Do

Things to see and do in Devonport, Devonport highlights, Devonport activities and attractions, and points of interest in Devonport - the ALL NEW Jasons Devonport Things to Do Guide is your complete guide to sightseeing in Devonport.

  • Mount Victoria
Devonport's highest volcano (81m) was an important pa (fort) from which Maori fishing expeditions were made around the Waitemata Harbour. At the foot of Mount Victoria on the northern side is an old cemetery (opened in 1856), where some of the North Shore's earliest settlers are buried.
  • North Head
This landmark volcano provides panoramic views out to Rangitoto Island and across to the city skyline, and is a popular picnic spot. It houses a series of military tunnels and batteries built to protect the city during World Wars I & II.
  • Devonport Naval Museum
Recreates New Zealand's naval history through paintings, photographs, maps, naval dispatches and a collection of sailors' belongings, including uniforms, caps, badges, medals and clay pipes.
  • Devonport Museum
Showcases the history of Devonport, the Waitemata Harbour and Auckland's maritime heritage, including a photographic archive of the ferries that have plied the Waitemata Harbour since the 1850s. Open weekends 2-4pm.
  • Cheltenham & Narrow Neck Beaches
A short bus-ride from Devonport, these sandy beaches provide picnic spots and safe swimming during summer (Cheltenham is not suitable for swimming at low tide). There are picnic and barbecue sites on the grass reserve behind Narrow Neck. Walking around the rocks at the north end of Narrow Neck brings you to St Leonard's - a stretch of rocky shore platforms and sandy coves frequented by gulls, pied shags, blue reef herons and oystercatchers.
  • Devonport Wine & Food Festival
Held annually in February, this festival attracts thousands of visitors to sample the vintage of New Zealand vineyards, and to enjoy the many types of ethnic and local cuisine.
