North Island

  • Make sure you visit Huka Falls to see some 220 000 litres of water go over the falls every second then head onto the Aratiatia Rapids to see the dam be let go. You'll see the water thunder down the river bed giving you and idea of just how powerful it is. The dam is released daily at 10am, 12noon and 2pm with a 4pm release in summer.
  • Love chocolate? You will LOVE Makana Confections in Kerikeri. Delicious handmade chocolates just waiting for good homes.
  • One Tree Hill is an Auckland, and thanks to the band U2, an international, must visit. The 360 degree view of Auckland is astounding, and the surrounding parkland is a lovely spot for a picnic.
  • Northland is known as 'Te Tai-tokerau' in Maori. It means 'the tail of the fish' and relates to the Maori legend that says Maui fished up the North Island of New Zealand from the depths of the ocean.
