The Nelson Lakes Area

With its snow-capped mountains, clear streams and glacier carved lakes, the Nelson Lakes area is nothing short of spectacular. On the shores of Lake Rotoiti, the alpine village of St Arnaud makes a great springboard to the stunning 102,000 hectare Nelson Lakes National Park, which embraces Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotoroa, steep mountains and beech-tree forests.

Sculpted by massive glaciers, the Nelson Lakes area is teeming with activities and outdoor adventures, including fishing, boating, climbing and hiking, or head to the ski area at nearby Rainbow for some winter fun. Northeast of St Arnaud, you can visit the historic hotel at Tophouse township, or head across to Murchison at the gateway to the Buller Gorge for a spot of adventure, including fishing, kayaking, rafting, jetboating and goldpanning.
