  • Mount Cook National Park
An alpine region of ice, snow, rock, subalpine scrub, tussock and riverbed. More than one third of the park is permanent snow and glacier ice, and there are 28 peaks which exceed 3000m. The park forms part of a World Heritage area and is renowned for its spectacular scenery.
  • Tasman Glacier
Up to 3km wide in places, and 29km long, the glacier is one of the longest in the world outside the polar regions. Ski planes land on the glacier, allowing visitors to explore.
  • Walks
Established walks include the 10min Bowen Track, the 15min Glencoe walk and nature trails to Kea Point (2.5hr return) and Governors Bush (1hr). Longer walks include Wakefield (3.5hr return), Sealy Tarns (3.5hr return) and Red Tarns (2.5hr return) tracks. Trans-alpine tracks are only for those with mountaineering experience, as conditions can be dangerous.
  • Climbing
Mount Cook is the main centre of climbing in New Zealand but conditions can change rapidly, and climbers should check with park rangers before setting out. There is a Department of Conservation Visitor Centre at the village to advise on guided tours and hiking routes.
