From ski slopes to lakes and mountain walks, the Mid-Canterbury area has plenty of outdoor action. You can fish for trout or salmon in the region’s crystal clear rivers or enjoy a round of golf in the clean Canterbury air. Ashburton, with its tree-lined streets and lovely parks and gardens, is the heart of the Mid-Canterbury region. Nature lovers will find Mount Somers the perfect base for scenic hikes or a spot of fishing and boating on the nearby lakes.

Mount Hutt is a magnet for skiers over winter, and there are some fine sub-alpine walks to discover. The bustling village of Methven provides plenty of après ski fun after the sun goes down, along with year-round outdoor adventure including scenic flights, hunting, mountaineering, skydiving, horse-riding and hot air ballooning. The town of Rakaia also has adventure thrills with salmon fishing, rafting and jetboating on the Rakaia River.
