In Mataura you fish. The scenery may not be the most spectacular or breath-taking in the country, but if you like your trout, you'll be close to heaven. This river has some of the best dry-fly trout fishing in the world and was even awarded a Water Conservation Order in 1996 for its outstanding fisheries and angling amenity values. This is well-known as a hot-spot among fishing aficionados in Japan and the US and people often go back for more.

The river is renowned for its hatches, and good hatches can appear even on cold days. It is the best "match the hatch" fishing in the country. The beautifully clear water means you can also give sight fishing a go. And if you don't know what you're doing, there are fishing guides on hand to take you out.
