Heading north of Auckland, wine and food lovers will enjoy the Matakana Coast and its flourishing wineries, and there is no shortage of places to go for a tasting or delicious winery lunch. The Matakana Coast has a wonderful array of fresh produce – stop at some of the roadside stalls or check out the Saturday morning farmers' market in Matakana village.

The tiny fishing village of Leigh is a great place to enjoy fish and chips down at the wharf, or head to beautiful Pakiri Beach for horseriding or surfcasting. Historic Warkworth, with its crafts, galleries and riverside cafés, makes a delightful base for exploring the Matakana Coast. Pack a picnic and head to Snells Beach, or catch the ferry at Sandspit and visit Kawau Island, famous for its historic Mansion House. Matakana is within easy reach of beautiful Tawharanui Regional Park, the surf beach at Omaha and Goat Island, with its marine reserve.
