The twin villages of Mangawhai and
Mangawhai Heads are nestled around a harbour fringed with pohutukawa trees and mangroves on one side and big sand dunes on the other. Dramatic vistas lead the eye to the nearby Hen and Chicken Islands and the Hauraki Gulf. There is a permanent population of 2000, which swells at weekends and holidays. The two shopping centres cater for all needs from the everyday necessities to quality crafts and gifts. In Mangawhai there are several cafés and restaurants, including the historic tavern which is a popular band venue in summer.
