Jet Boat Trips
Scenic Flights Fixed Wing or Helicopter

65kms North of Wanaka - 80kms South of Haast. Approximately 1/2 Way between the Glaciers and Queenstown on the Haast Pass Highway (SH6)

Tucked in under Mt Shrimpton, Makarora Tourist Centre with it's 'A' frame accommodation borders the Mt Aspiring World Heritage National Park. Across Sate Highway 6 and the licenced airstrip the Makarora River meanders it's way 10 kilometres to the head of Lake Wanaka. The little hanging valley, the Teal, looks down over the river towards the complex while the Wilkin and Young Valleys, with their towering mountains and native beech covered slopes, stand majestically to each side of the Teal.

Southern Alps Air, The Wilkin River Jets, and BackCountry Helicopters can show you this amazing area by jet-boating the Makarora and Wilkin Rivers or give you a birds eye view from the air whether you choose fix-winged or helicopter. Or perhaps you can take the opportunity to do the Siberia Experience, a combination of a flight, a bush walk and jet boat trip back to base from Kerin Forks. Our valley location offers countless opportunities for exploring our stunning and remote surroundings.

Adjacent to the complex there's a twenty minute nature walk through a small stand of podocarp forest teeming with bird life where sometimes glow worms can be seen at night. The Department of Conservation have developed this walk and labelled many species of native flora and historical relics from the time milling was the Valley's main industry. There are many other short or long walks nearby as well. Several lead off the State Highway 6 such as the Blue Pools where you can commonly see trout beneath the bridge. For trampers there are several 2-3 day journeys using the Department of Conservation huts provided.

Alternatively, you can just relax by the pool, read a book at your unit, have a meal from the caf or drink at the bar enjoying the sunset from the deck, or take your fishing rod and get a brown or rainbow trout for your tea.

Over many years continuous planting at the camp has encouraged the native birds such as pigeons, tuis, bellbirds, wax eyes, fantails, tomtits and finches to flourish in our area. Some years during the spring, kakas have been seen feeding on the flax flowers next to one of the lodges. Of course, there are the blackbirds, thrushes, sparrows and chaffinches as well.

"One night for family of 2 adults 5 children"

Cute accommodation. Very clean and tidy room. For our family there were not enough power points to have the heaters going and to charge up cameras/devices for taking photos the next day. I suggest you take a multibox if there are several of you. Would certainly stay again and make it a longer visit to explore the places around Makarora.

    "Lovely location, bring a car"

We visited in mid March, and it was quite chilly. The cabins don't have great heating capacity, and it made for a cold night.

That said, the view and surrounding area is spectacular. Just be sure to bring a car -- if you stop off from the bus, the hike options you have are quite limited.

    "A Frame Village"

Interesting history, this location was until quite recently the end of the road from Wanaka. The centre was developed privately. Lots of A frame chalets, some backpacker style and some private, situated on a large park. Excellent ensuite facs in my shared one. Kitchen was nearby in another building. Main building has a café that does meals. Very convenient for cyclists travelling from Wanaka to Haast. Good value for money.

Booked a bed in a 4 share dorm, en suite bathroom which was fantastic. Bed was comfortable, good cooking facilities also a small shop where you can buy nesscesities. Excellent bar and restaurant didn't eat but the food looked tasty. Plenty of people around but the centre did not feel busy or crowded

    Enjoyed my stay.

"Comfortable, well eqipped. Ideal for one night stop"

We had stayed at Makarora before, so were happy to book again. It is conveniently placed between the West Coast and Otago, so is ideal for a one night stop. There are things to do in the locality, but we did not investigate them. The facilities provided are comprehensive and everything worked as expected. The cabins are welcoming and roomy. We would certainly stay again.

    "Review of staying at Makorara"

We had a warm welcome from the staff, and a comfortable, clean cabin. However we were disappointed that the washing machine only did a cold wash and there was no functioning iron (there were two in the laundry room, but neither was working). We found this out after the wash, so had to take un-ironed clothes to our next accommodation. The top of the cabin's front windows had no curtains across, so light came in easily in the morning. (I like to sleep in a dark room).

Also emphasis was put on the campsite being ecologically minded, but there were two dripping taps from the water supply -we mentioned this to the staff, who knew about these, but did not seem bothered about the water being wasted.

    "Must do this"

We Loved this place! Best first night of holiday! The A-frame was so nice and spacious, and directly across from the swimming pool!

The blue pools (10 minutes towards hasst pass) cured our kids of car sickness! Making rock people was so nice a relaxing. The history of how this lodge came to be is interesting. We felt grateful to be able to share this place with our children and teach them to respect the beauty of our country. Keep up the good work!

    "no power in the valley"

We stayed here when we could not find room in Wanaka on NY Eve. We had a nice cabin. It was great. The power was out due to a storm, but we had a great start. They used a generator to cook a nice buffet spread. Power came on overnight. They worked hard to make it work with no power, letting us charge things to the room while power was done and credit card machines were out.

    "Mostly OK"

Happy with environment and space and even room. Carpet could do with a proper clean.

and beds just creaked and cluncked on ever little turn, to the point that had to put mattresses on floor just to sleep.

Also mattresses are very thin, you would expect a little better.

Pool great, grounds great, facilities awesome, people good, everything else for the value of the dollar spent is fantastic really - i personally think it just need those couple of things sorted and just keep with your maintenance - thank you for the stay - when the beds were not creaking we slept peacefully.

    "NICE STAY"

This review is from a family group from the US. Great place to rest, re-group and continue on your trip; we stayed in one of the "A-shapes with wings"--very clean and allowed for sleeping privacy with the two winged compartments. Reading light a nice touch. Although we cooked our own breakfast, the selections in the cafeteria looked awesome. The facility is showing its age somewhat, but nothing that would take away from the over-all pleasant experience.

    "Good enough for summer holidays"

Makarora is fine for summer, but not for winter because it is too cold. I stayed in a cabin shared fCilities, which was quite far away for the toilets, since only the main ones were open. At night there was no light which is great to see the stars, but it makes it hard to find the way to the toilets or the kitchen.

I'm alergic to certain bugs, and I got biten by some bedbugs during the night which made my stay a little less pleasant because of the consequences...

Hi Angeles. We are sorry you found it so cold here in October, yes we were experiencing some extemley cold weather over that period. As the camp was not fully opened for the summer season the toilets and showers located at your choice of room were not operating yet. We can assure you they are clearly lit in the summer months. We can also assure you there are NO 'bed-bugs' in our rooms. What you experienced was more than likely the common 'sand-fly'. We check and heat steam our rooms on a regular basis to ensure there will be NO bed-bugs. We are also very happy to provide extra heating on your request.

Lovely part of the country. Tiny little A frame basic cabins that were clean and tidy. Everything is a bit dated and retro but a great getaway if you like the quiet. Facilities need an update but otherwise loved it. We were the only people there. Beautiful mountain views and lovely bush walks. Will stay again.

    "Well done"

We were quite happy with staying here. The rooms were very simple and cozy with wood lined walls. We also noticed that everything seems very clean and cared for. Every practicality was well provided for, more so than usual. If you want huge TVs and other people to feed you so you can lounge, it might not be the place for you, but if you want a nice place to relax and have everything you'd need to take care of yourself, this is an excellent place.

    "Beautiful place"

We were travelling for a month around New Zealand and this was the most beautiful place we stayed. The surrounding mountains are stunning and it's a really peaceful and lovely place to stay. Our A frame bungalow had a kitchen and bathroom and was really comfortable. The food in the bar and restaurant and bar was delicious and generous. I would definitely recommend staying at this place. The staff were friendly and helpful but maybe a little jaded - it felt like there were a lot of people passing through and they were not very interested in their guests. This was different from everywhere else I stayed and the only thing that was a bit off.

My FAVOURITE PLACE is Makarora Tourist Centre. It's got everything, it's clean, cheap, great food, warm hospitality, petrol, shop, cafe and restaurant - and all within about 100m stroll.

Relieved to escape the human swamp of Wanaka to stay up the road in this quiet corner of the country. The style of the chalets may seem dated but ours was immaculately clean and tidy. Very nice spot, with lots of short walks nearby

    "brief stay at Makarora"

Great place to break the journey with so much to do and see. Beautiful native bush walks, plane rides, boat rides and healthy activities declutters the mind. The A framed chalet was a Godsend after having been on the road for several hours. It was modern, comfortable and warm with the conspicuous absence of electronics such as a TV.

    "Great location and people"

I stayed at the visitor center for two non consecutive nights during my trip to NZ. The accomodations are basic but are as advertised. I stayed in cabin 8 and cabin 7. Neither is en suite but the showers and toilets were a short walk and were clean. Cabin 8 was a bit nicer primarily due to a wierd hot water system in #7.

I liked the fact that the place never appeared crowed even though it was sold out.

The biggest feature of this location is the great restaurant and people. It is a good place to kick back and talk to locals while having a crafted pint and very large servings of food.

If you are not a person that needs luxury, but you are wanting a clean place with a good restaurant, this is worth considering.

"Adequate - we chose due to location."

My husband and I stayed in a chalet - it is dated, but clean and functional. Feels like cabins I stayed in with my birth family in the 50's.

We stayed in one other similar but they charged less. Bathroom needs updating!

Our stay at Makarora was fantastic. Accommodation and services were better than expected. Lovely location. Great facilities and staff.

Would be good to have insect screens on at least one or two windows in the cabin.

Otherwise - no complaints at all.

    "Welcome to birds paradise"

It's incredible how much can fit in such a modest looking cabin. It was well equipped, so we were able to cook a nice Christmas dinner, and have it on our picnic table, listening to tui, korimako and kereru hovering over and singing their heart out. The swimming pool is a nice addition after a climb to the nearby Haast pass lookout. A recommended destination :)

    General basic room, spacious room.

Not enough cookery & cutlery in the cooking facility.

Small washing machine & dryer in the laundry, a bit pricey as for $3 for this tiny dryer.

    "Overnight stay"

The A frame chalet was clean and warm but it was not in the quiet wooded area that we had thought it would be. A helicopter almost on the doorstep taking off at 5.40am didn't help. Another issue we had was the toilet window had clear glass in it and lacked either blind or curtain, we did point this out to a member of staff as I'm sure this does not meet requirements.

    "Great Place to stay"

Overall is good & value for money, and the location undeniably is great for retreat & unwind. For those who traveled for whole day, great place to overnight due to the nature & serenity of the cabin as well as near to next tourist spot, ie: Lake Wanaka (an hour drive only).

The shortfall is the water heater is insufficient for a cabin of 4 person, as the moment the 2nd person has utilized the water turns icy cold.

Overall, it is still recommendable to stay.

    "Our Stay in Makarora"

On the day of Our Visit, we were running late, due to having a look at what the West Coast has to offer! We arrived at Makarora about 8 Pm in the evening, quite dark.

We had a look around the property, but did not know which Unit we had been booked into. On looking on the Office Front Door (which was closed), I saw a map with Our Name on it. This made it very Easy to find our Unit, which When we entered, was nice and warm, due to the fact that the Lights and Heaters had been left on for us. Very Welcoming! As at the time it was very cold, it was good to find that all the beds were fitted with Electric Blankets. There was plenty of Hot Water for all of us (6), and the Unit Was clean and tidy, with all facilities that you would expect. We spent a nice warm night in the unit, and then left in the morning to go on to Wanaka

    "Great option in Makarora"

I stayed here in April 2012 while on a bike tour through the South Island. Options were limited, but I was very pleased. I stayed in an A frame cabin, sleeps 4 though I was alone. Very simple and basic, but clean and comfortable. As I did not want to go far to eat, I had dinner in the cafe, a very tasty pasta dish that was probably the best meal of my tour. My only complaint was that there were not any breakfast breads available for purchase for takeway for the morning since the cafe didn't open until 8am. I would definitely stay here again.

    "Fantastic!"

This was an absolute gem and I can't recommend it enough. Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. My cabin was very comfortable, it had full cooking facilities and everything I needed was there. There was a small toilet block close by and then a slightly longer stroll took me to the main facilities. Showers were lovely and hot with good pressure. They have a small selection of groceries at the Centre however you would need to ensure you have all the food you want prior to getting there. You can buy meals at the Tourist Centre and Wanaka is about a 50 minute drive south. The view onto the hills was superb and the night sky just awesome. Sandflies weren't a problem. If you want a restful and peaceful place to stay, I thoroughly recommend it. To truly appreciate it you would need to stay longer than a night, and there is so much to do (outdoor related), or just take it quietly and sit in the sun. Can't wait to go back.

    "Pleasant stay"

Despite being close to a main road and aircraft landing strip this was a quiet and pleasant place to stay as both road and air traffic were very light. Our accommodation was spacious with bathroom and cooking facilities provided. There was a restaurant (which we did not sample) and the shop had a small range of groceries. When we stayed there was no tv reception or mobile phone reception but that did not bother us. There was a nice walk through a nature reserve right next to the camp. I would recommend this as a place to stay. We only stayed one night but there were things to do that would justify a couple of nights or more.

Nothing like what I expected. It sells itself as a "Wilderness" resort: the website has expansive views of wilderness. In practice, we ended up overlooking the filling station, with several campervans in the way. The main road was also noisy through the night and quite audible from the hut.

    "enjoyable stay"

My sister and I are visiting South Island for the first time and we are traveling anti-clockwise starting at Greymouth (after catching the Trans Alpine Express from Christchurch). After leaving Haast we decided to stay 2 nights at Makarora Resort and were delighted with the cabin that was offered us. Great views of the lake and mountains. The unit was comfortable, very tidy and it was not hard to see that the maintenance was excellent both inside the units and the ammenities on the large rambling property. There is an excellent community building which included a fireplace. The bar and restaurant/cafe has a great "alpine" character and the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Staying here has been one of the highlights of our 17 day tour and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

Yes, Mt Aspiring National Park is great etc. etc. but we booked a night's stay prinicipally because of the cluster of A-frames at MTC, a number of which date back to the mid-1960s. We (2 adults, 4 year-old, 2 year-old) stayed in "Little Blue" aka No. 5 which is one the smallest and is in very original but tidy condition. There are others which are larger and/or more modern and you have the option of greater or lesser seclusion. Seriously cool and moderately priced.

"Great - but avoid the buffet!!"

We found the accommodation delightful and with a very relaxing setting. I would like to suggest they include a coffee plunger in the rooms as I like my coffee in the mornings.

The cabin was clean, spacious and comfortable.

One criticism I do have is with the standard of food in the restaurant/bar. We ate there on 31/12 from the buffet. The food was not hot, nor did it look particularly fresh. However due to our budget this was the only option for our family. Later that evening my son experienced severe vomiting of his entire meal. The following morning he was completely normal, with no sign of sickness or a temperature - which can only be food poisoning.

This did put a damper on our overall experience and while we would stay there again, we would not recommend anyone eat at the restaurant/cafe. I hope my comments are useful.

    Thank you

Great place to stay if you like bush walking and fishing and to relax, we were impressed with the change of sheets which was a first we have seen in this type of accommodation. The only thing I think they could improve on is more cooking facitlties another stove, bigger fridge and a freezer and maybe a indoor drying room, it was sooo hard trying to get clothes and shoes dry and with a family of 5 its something thats needed with the amount of west coast rain.

But all in all great place.
