Middle 'A-Frame' Chalets are completely self-contained and are set in natural bush surround giving each unit seclusion and privacy. These units sleep 2 - 4 people.
These standard rooms have a queen bed and 3 single beds in the one room. Communal kitchen & Ablution amenities nearby.
These Motels have two side wings which can be divided off by curtains from the main room. Each wing has two single beds and the main room has a queen bed making it possible to sleep six people
Large 2 roomed A Frames are completely self-contained and are set in natural bush surrounds giving each unit seclusion and privacy. Sleep 2 - 7 people.
The backpackers room was good- plenty of space and an ensuite! The kitchen/dining room was well equipped and spacious. Everything was clean and tidy.
Four of us (2 couples) stayed in one of the large A frames with 2 wings. We had a lot of fun. There was so much room and we were extremely comfortable. We were in New Zealand for 2 weeks and it was one of our favourite places to stay. The staff and food at the lodge were excellent also. Overall, excellent value for the money.
I stayed here in April 2012 while on a bike tour through the South Island. Options were limited, but I was very pleased. I stayed in an A frame cabin, sleeps 4 though I was alone. Very simple and basic, but clean and comfortable. As I did not want to go far to eat, I had dinner in the cafe, a very tasty pasta dish that was probably the best meal of my tour. My only complaint was that there were not any breakfast breads available for purchase for takeway for the morning since the cafe didn't open until 8am. I would definitely stay here again.
This was an absolute gem and I can't recommend it enough. Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. My cabin was very comfortable, it had full cooking facilities and everything I needed was there. There was a small toilet block close by and then a slightly longer stroll took me to the main facilities. Showers were lovely and hot with good pressure. They have a small selection of groceries at the Centre however you would need to ensure you have all the food you want prior to getting there. You can buy meals at the Tourist Centre and Wanaka is about a 50 minute drive south. The view onto the hills was superb and the night sky just awesome. Sandflies weren't a problem. If you want a restful and peaceful place to stay, I thoroughly recommend it. To truly appreciate it you would need to stay longer than a night, and there is so much to do (outdoor related), or just take it quietly and sit in the sun. Can't wait to go back.
We loved our stay in the clean and comfy chalet. We were so glad to have appropriate cooking facilities for our freshly procured whitebait evening meal. The morning bush walk before setting off on our journey south was both attractive and refreshing. The reception staff were friendly and obliging.Thank you.
CLEAN AND TIDY CAFE AND FOOD GREAT,JUST GOOD PLACE TO STAY
Makarora is a beautiful place but it's extremely small... so it's a welcome surprise to find a place like the Tourist Centre which has great chalets, awesome staff, excellent food and great beer on tap. A wonderful spot to stay!
We will give this a 4 out of 5. The accommodation was different - we have not stayed in an A frame cabin before and the main bed was good. The food in the restaurant was great - we both had the lamb shanks and they scored full marks. Helpful service.
Accommodation very comfortable. Recommend the buffet meal to set you up for the Gillespies tramp!
Despite being close to a main road and aircraft landing strip this was a quiet and pleasant place to stay as both road and air traffic were very light. Our accommodation was spacious with bathroom and cooking facilities provided. There was a restaurant (which we did not sample) and the shop had a small range of groceries. When we stayed there was no tv reception or mobile phone reception but that did not bother us. There was a nice walk through a nature reserve right next to the camp. I would recommend this as a place to stay. We only stayed one night but there were things to do that would justify a couple of nights or more.
My family had a wonderful stay. The cabin was clean and comfy, and everyone we dealt with, from reception to the cafe, were very friendly.
Loved the A frame units, only thing was the beds were so hard, perhaps some new mattresses please. Great location, birds singing, great views. Meals were ok.
Nothing like what I expected. It sells itself as a "Wilderness" resort: the website has expansive views of wilderness. In practice, we ended up overlooking the filling station, with several campervans in the way. The main road was also noisy through the night and quite audible from the hut.
The A frame hut was tired, but serviceable.
Stopped at Makarora Tourist Centre at end of long day. Warm and welcoming. Well equipped chalet for two couples. Loved the birdlife and snow-capped mountains. Will be back to plan some treks in Siberia.
Great place to stay. We enjoyed everything, clean, wonderfully located.
Used as a pit stop on way to Franz Joseph. After a change of hut, facilities all ok.
Friendly staff in cafe and bar, on site, food was adequate. Interesting karaoke night with back packers.
Great place very clean and tidy.
Helpful and oblliging staff.
Recommend highly.
Great location - beautiful, peaceful, relaxing setting. Shame it rained non-stop during our stay preventing us from doing some hiking. Need to come back one day...
lovely place, though it is in the middle of nowhere, nothing to do, unless u r with your own friends. the staff there were very nice, kept the bar and karaoke open for us,gave us free muffins and wine.very clean and neat
We arrived late for checked in and were given a warm welcome. The A-Frame house that we stayed in was a family suite that came with a double bed and 2 single beds. It also has a bathroom, a toilet and a well equipped kitchen(a fridge, a cooking stove, a microwave oven, electric kettle, cooking utensils, tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc). It's so convenient for us as everything's within reach. Everything 's new and clean. We love this beautiful place and it's highly recommended. We had a wonderful stay here.
Pleasant rural setting although easily accessible from a well used route. There is much more available on site for use by summer visitors. Accommodation in a frame chalet was comfortable.Friendly staff and good food at the site restaurant/bar.
Nice cottages in a peaceful part of the world.
Very poorly lit to travel to dinner.
Coffee and service from the gentleman at the meal place was excellent/ food quality was disgusting! ANd very dirty.
Not easy to find your room in the dark.
The room was clean and tidy same with kitchen and toilets.
Heater above the main bed and being element/bar heater not a good one to leave on when it is freezing.
My sister and I are visiting South Island for the first time and we are traveling anti-clockwise starting at Greymouth (after catching the Trans Alpine Express from Christchurch). After leaving Haast we decided to stay 2 nights at Makarora Resort and were delighted with the cabin that was offered us. Great views of the lake and mountains. The unit was comfortable, very tidy and it was not hard to see that the maintenance was excellent both inside the units and the ammenities on the large rambling property. There is an excellent community building which included a fireplace. The bar and restaurant/cafe has a great "alpine" character and the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Staying here has been one of the highlights of our 17 day tour and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others.
We enjoyed our stay very much. The room was very clean and nicely decorated. The kitchen was also very clean with nice dishes and utencils for use. We enjoyed the location and the nature walk. The staff was friendly and helpful. The only drawback was the helicopter taking off and landing across the road. It was very noisy.
A stunning, private and quiet location set amongst trees and against the back drop of towering mountain ranges. Excellent clean and functional accommodation that was great value. Will certainly stay again on or next holiday.
We have stayed with my parent on early April. The villas is good & special but I want the food in their restaurant need to improve.
Very much enjoyed our stay at Makarora. The A-frame was beautiful and comfortable, in beautiful surroundings. Great food in the cafe, including their own tasty beer on tap. Would definitely stay here again.
the accommodation was comfortable, close to the facilities. however, there was no hot water in the shower. There was also no option of ensuite. Kitchen was clean. Besides no hot water the sat was otherwise good. Beautiful location.
Great place to stay in magnificent scenery. Nice cabin and helpful staff.
If a service of internal is provided at Chalets, there should be a good place.
We enjoyed our stay very much: the setting, the cleanliness, the standards of the unit, very well appointed kitchen, clean and modern ablution block. would be happy to stay there again/recommend it to others

A frame rooms, well laid out , COMFORTABLE beds, Great new shower and toilets as ensuite, very airy, dinner room and kitchen close
Nice, clean, friendly, good location
The staff were very helpful and friendly and had anticipated all our requirements.
Our unit was clean, quiet and the settiing was peaceful, amongst trees with the sounds of many Tui birds in the morning and evening.
Great value for money and conveniently situated.
Yes, Mt Aspiring National Park is great etc. etc. but we booked a night's stay prinicipally because of the cluster of A-frames at MTC, a number of which date back to the mid-1960s. We (2 adults, 4 year-old, 2 year-old) stayed in "Little Blue" aka No. 5 which is one the smallest and is in very original but tidy condition. There are others which are larger and/or more modern and you have the option of greater or lesser seclusion. Seriously cool and moderately priced.
makarora.. The gateway to the Haast. Accomadation is comfortable and very relaxing, the centre has all your needs covered from a beer to dining, central to all walks....... JUST A GREAT PLACE TO UNWIND
We found the accommodation delightful and with a very relaxing setting. I would like to suggest they include a coffee plunger in the rooms as I like my coffee in the mornings.
The cabin was clean, spacious and comfortable.
One criticism I do have is with the standard of food in the restaurant/bar. We ate there on 31/12 from the buffet. The food was not hot, nor did it look particularly fresh. However due to our budget this was the only option for our family. Later that evening my son experienced severe vomiting of his entire meal. The following morning he was completely normal, with no sign of sickness or a temperature - which can only be food poisoning.
This did put a damper on our overall experience and while we would stay there again, we would not recommend anyone eat at the restaurant/cafe. I hope my comments are useful.
Thank you
Quite nice place, Cottage was nice but dors are bad isolated. The Cooking Facilities were not very great but worked. Staff was ok. Laundry facilities are very basic.
We were impressed with the service on arrival, the quality of the accommodation and of course the location. Although it was only for one night on our journey from Greymouth to Queenstown we wished that we had longer to spend in the tranquil and beautiful valley. Maybe next time!!
Great place to stay if you like bush walking and fishing and to relax, we were impressed with the change of sheets which was a first we have seen in this type of accommodation. The only thing I think they could improve on is more cooking facitlties another stove, bigger fridge and a freezer and maybe a indoor drying room, it was sooo hard trying to get clothes and shoes dry and with a family of 5 its something thats needed with the amount of west coast rain.
But all in all great place.
We enjoyed our stay. The cabin was clean and comfortable, with a great view through the front windows.
The food at the restaurant exceeded our expectations (both dinner and breakfast).
I expect to stay here again due to the location and the friendly staff.
My party stayed in a cozy cabin on the edge of a beautiful rainforest! It was clean (thought the beds were quite uncomfortable)....still worth a stay though because of the excellent location off the Haast Highway. If you're travelling between the West Coast and Otago this is a good place to stay.
I absolutely loved Makarora, the bush setting surrounded by serious snow-capped mountains. The restaurant/bar is large and the service good. The cabins have kitchenettes but no televisions. You can believe you're in the bush while being close to everything you need. A perfect place to give yourself a break from modern life.
I loved the Makarora Tourist Centre and its cute A frame cabins. The accommodation was clean and warm and well set up with kitchen stuff, and located on an absolutely beautiful bush clad site. Definitely will come back in the summer when the swimming pool is open. I hope it retains its old school charm and never turns into a rip off like so many places in NZ.
We had changed our plans and only made the booking the night before. It was easy to book online and there were no problems with picking up keys etc. It was clean and tidy. The shared facilities were great. We usually get a cabin with a kitchen because we travel as a family but it was no problem using the communal facilities which were clean and comfortable. A pleasant stay.
We loved these A frame units very clean. The veiw from the bed was stunning. The best shower we had had in a week .We arrived late in the day and the barman was very happy to cook something up for our tea.
