Southland is the place to go for a successful trout fishing experience and Lumsden is located near some of the best rivers in the region. This small town is tucked away in a peaceful basin and is the crossroads for northern Southland. The Oreti River rolls through Lumsden and is a source of the brown trout the region is so well-known for.

The Railway Station is an important feature of Lumsden, just as it was when the railway first came here in 1878.
