The busy country town of Levin sits at the heart of the Horowhenua Plains, surrounded by the rolling countryside of the Manawatu. You can enjoy the town’s bargain shopping, have some fun at the aquatic centre or explore some of the peaceful parks. Sandwiched between the magnificent Tararua Ranges on one side, and the wild Tasman Sea on the other, Levin is also ideally placed for swimming, boating and fishing at Manawatu’s coastal beaches, and handy to fishing, hunting and hiking adventures in the rugged Tararuas. Just out of town, there is rowing and yachting at popular Lake Horowhenua, while to the south, you can enjoy the walks and birdwatching at Lake Papaitonga scenic reserve. Just 10 minutes north-east of Levin is lovely Waitarere Beach, ideal for land yachting, 4 wheel motor bikes, surfing and fishing. Walk south along the beach and you’ll find the rusting remains of the sailing ship Hydrabad, blown ashore in 1878.
