- If you head into the Mackenzie Country, make sure you stop at Lake Tekapo and see the bronze Sheep Dog Statue, forever watching over the lake. It's dedicated to all of the back country working dogs that make such a big difference to the high country farmers when it comes to finding and moving stock in difficult terrain.
- Lake Tekapo has a distinct turquoise colour, almost a little milky, due to very fine particles of rock (like flour) suspended in the water crushed by the glaciers in the backcountry.
- Make the walk up to the Mt John's Observatory. Not only is their an amazing view (even with the natural eye), but there's a good café and of course you can make arrangements for a star viewing. Truly stunning.
