• Fishing
    The Waitaki river is renowned for its trout and salmon fishing and people come from all around to have a go in the sparkling waters. The main season is from October through to April although Lakes Aviemore and Benmore are good all year round, except September.
  • Hunting
    Once the main fishing season finishes in May, there are excellent duck and geese hunting opportunities nearby.
  • Sports
    There are various sporting activities that can be done in town. There are tennis and squash courts, a covered swimming pool, bowling green, golf course.
  • Adventure sports
    Horse riding, cycling, hiking, four-wheel driving.
  • Snow sports
    The Awakino skifield is a small club field nearby, and is good for skiing and snowboarding.
  • Watersports
    The river is safe and there are three lakes nearby – the Waitaki, Aviemore and Benmore. Head down and enjoy any number of watersports including canoeing, swimming, kayaking and boating. The Waitaki is one of New Zealand’s best jetboating rivers - heaps of fun with lots of turns and spins. There is a yachting regatta on Lake Waitaki each year and they sometimes have national windsurfing champs here.
  • Walks
    There are various walks to do in the area – these are a fabulous way to enjoy the surrounding beauty of the area. Take the 45 minute walk to the top of Kurow Hill where there are great views over the Waitaki Valley. The Benmore track - starting above the Benmore dam - has fantastic views up the Haldron Arm to Mt Cook and of Otematata.
