One of the Coromandel’s most popular beaches, Hot Water Beach’s main claim to fame is the geothermal hot springs that lie bubbling just beneath the sand – a legacy of the region’s volcanic past. There are other hot water springs nearby but it’s the prime location right on the beach that have made these springs so popular with holiday makers and locals.
You can dig into the sand and create your own hot pool at low tide – dig near the rocks and in places where you can see steam rising at high tide. The local store hires out spades and, with a little arm work, you can soon be relaxing in your own private spa pool. The beach is equally popular with surfers and has a surf school and surf shop, but be careful as the rips here are strong. There is good diving offshore and for a change of pace, you can relax over lunch at the local café, just a minute’s walk from the beach.
