This small settlement 79km south of Hokitika is an ideal base for walking, birdwatching and fishing, which are all excellent on this part of the West Coast. For anglers there is trout and salmon fishing at the river mouths.

Harihari is also known as the landing place of the first solo flight across the Tasman Sea from Sydney. In 1931 Australia's Guy Menzies crash-landed upside down in a Harihari swamp, after taking almost 12 hours to complete the trip.
