Overview
On the banks of the majestic Waikato River, the world-renowned Hamilton Gardens features many beautiful examples of classic garden designs from throughout history.
The overall theme is 'The Story of Gardens' told through five garden collections. The Paradise Garden Collection includes the Italian Renaissance Garden, Chinese Scholars' Garden, and Indian Char Bagh Garden, while the Productive Garden Collection features Hamilton Gardens' latest addition: Te Parapara, a stunning new garden focusing on traditional Maori horticulture with particular reference to the local Waikato area. Pre-European Maori horticulture was intimately connected to spiritual belief and was governed by elaborate yet practical rituals. Te Parapara offers an unprecedented opportunity to get up close to this unique culture.
Hamilton Gardens is located alongside State Highway One on the southern side of Hamilton city. It is open 7 days and entry is free.
