"Great Prize" This was given a review of 4 stars (Good)

I enjoyed a great stay at Portside over Labour weekend as a prize won through Jasons agents competition. Found all the staff we dealt with to be very helpful and friendly - great room and fantastic in room facilities which made an extremely comfortable and enjoyable visit. Would stay again when next in Gisborne.

"Nice location and venue, average service" This was given a review of 3 stars (Average)

Loved the location, a lot to look at with the Port and people walking, boats arriving, logging etc (if you like that sort of thing), overlooking the old buildings where the freezing works were. Generally the staff were very pleasant if a bit laid back. A little more attention to details would not go astray, renew tissues that ran out, asked for another tea towel (I don't expect them to do the dishes - filled the dishwasher), a basic item, toilet brush not there. They are very eco friendly which is great but sometimes a bit of dishwashing liquid would help when you have fried something! Beds done, towels renewed but little things missed (one of the previous half empty shampoo bottles in the corner not picked up), Americans would probably complain for the price. Also my Sunday papers which I had not finished with, 'disappeared', not put out as rubbish.. Reception was OK but not over helpful in inquiring if everything was OK (especially when trying to access computer). Overall was quite happy with the atmosphere but unfortunately the younger generation need a lot of training to meet the standard nowadays (I know it is only a small town). Don't want to complain unnecessarily but for someone that seldom has the luxury of a few nights away, it is nice when people show they care. Also would have been nice to have been asked if we wanted a paper in the morning, on inquiring the answer was 'they go quickly, would be a good idea to pay the night before. Unfortunately the service of the past is a bit hard to come by nowadays. One other things, there were painters in the opposite room (rarely painting, more rest breaks than I have ever seen before) and the odour of the paint was quite overwhelming, perhaps that could be done 'out of season'.

"Okay stay" This was given a review of 3 stars (Average)

Ended up staying for a third night. Cost each night was $160 per night as I needed a room with 2 single beds. In doing so we missed out on having a room with a view of the water. Our door swipe key did not work so we were given a master key. Beds not that comfortable, was glad we took our own pillows. However we were allowed to borrow some broken boogey boards which we then trashed at Rere Slides. That was the highlight of our trip to Gisborne.

"Portside Hotel" This was given a review of 4 stars (Good)

The hotel is in an excellent location, within a short walk of the city centre, harbour and beach. Rooms are extremely well-appointed and very clean. Staff are polite and helpful. Ranchsliders in the room opened to a grassy area facing the harbour, I felt a small table and chairs would have been a welcome edition to the outdoor area. I noticed a few rooms had them, however ours did not. Otherwise I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone considering a visit to Gisborne.

"fresh clean simple accommodation" This was given a review of 5 stars (Excellent)

Clean, fresh, well cared for, simple hotel. No meals or drinks available on the property but good cafes close by, especially Ruba and USSCo. Kitchens in rooms so if you want to supermarket shop you can. Can walk to most places, and a car is handy to have. City rooms have a view of the car park and are sunny, harbour view look out onto the water, and the harbour side logs. Weekend prices were great value.
