If you enjoy fishing, then Eastern Southland is a fantastic spot to test your angling skills. The well-stocked Mataura River and its tributaries lure anglers from around the world in the hope of landing a plump brown trout. On the banks of the Mataura River, Gore
is the heart of the Eastern Southland region, and New Zealand’s brown trout capital.
Gore has some colourful tales to tell of its early moonshine days. The town’s Hokonui Moonshine Museum will teach you all about the area's illicit whisky distilling, or follow the Gore Heritage Trail to discover Gore’s historic sites. Mataura
also make great bases for anglers visiting Eastern Southland, and Winton has some fine heritage buildings dating back to the 1800s.
