Michelle Jack, Marketing Manager of Tourism Dunedin tells us what she loves about Dunedin.

A City of Contrasts and Contradictions - The list of things we can do is endless and it all just depends on your interests; there is something for everyone! It could be surfing one of the many fantastic beaches that surround Dunedin or listening to the City of Dunedin Highland Pipe band. Or it could be people-watching while sipping a coffee at one of the many cafes in the City, or even feeling the southerly wind on your face as you check out the penguins and albatross on the Otago Peninsula.

Art and Culture - Dunedin has a population of 25,000 students and don't we just love them! Not only for the youthful vitality they bring to Dunedin but the wide variety of modern art and design they create.  In contrast, the Dunedin Public Art Gallery has one of the best collections of British, European and early New Zealand art of any gallery in New Zealand.  Oh, so many galleries and exhibitions and so little time to do it all in!

Food Glorious Food!  Someone told me recently that Dunedin has the second most number of restaurants, cafes and bars per head of population in New Zealand.  Whether this is true or not, I believed them because there are so many excellent places to eat in Dunedin.  Go to the Farmers Market at the historic Dunedin Railway Station on a Saturday morning and you will see the vast array of home grown produce available.

Beautiful Historical Buildings - Nowhere else in New Zealand can you see so many Edwardian and Victorian buildings within such close proximity.  You don't need to take a tour to see these beloved beauties from the past, just wander around the City Centre.  Many of these buildings have been given a new lease of life and could very well be the hotel you are staying in, the restaurant you are eating at, or the gallery you are visiting. Just turn your gaze upward and behold the workmanship of the masters.

Quirky Events - Where else can you go to a ball at New Zealand's only castle? Eat, sculpture, and wear chocolate at a genuine chocolate carnival? Or test out how hot you can handle your curry at  New Zealand's only International Science Festival?  I love the uniqueness and quirky nature of some of Dunedin's events.

A Must Do: watch the world's only giant jaffa rolling race down the world's steepest street:
  • Dunedin Cadbury Jaffa Race, 13th July 2012
