Christchurch Itinerary

Embracing Timaru, the scenic Banks Peninsula and the Mt Cook Mackenzie Country, this region has plenty of touring options.

Spend a day or two taking in the sights of Christchurch. Whilst parts of the CBD were affected by the February 2011 earthquake, many activities and attractions in other parts of the city have reopened for business, including the Botanic Gardens and the award-winning International Antarctic Centre

Heading south, State Highway 1 leads to Temuka, where the famous pottery offers tours. Divert to Geraldine for a walk through the Peel Forest, a spectacular example of towering podocarps with native birds. For the more energetic, climbs to the top of Mount Peel or Little Mount Peel provide good views over the Canterbury Plains. Close by is the Rangitata River known for its world-class fishing and white water rafting.

Further south, State Highway 1 leads to the busy port of Timaru. The town is well known for the Victorian and Edwardian architecture which graces its downtown area, and Caroline Bay offers safe swimming and family facilities. The Aigantighe Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden (phone 03 688 4424) displays fine works by leading New Zealand artists, including Frances Hodgkins, Colin McCahon and CF Goldie. Browse through the South Canterbury Museum or sample some beer at the DB Mainland Brewery (phone 03 688 2059), which offers regular tours.

Alternatively, head northwards to Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula. This scenic area's attractions include a white-flippered penguin colony, swimming with Hector's dolphins (the world's smallest and rarest), and a seal colony, all protected by a mammal sanctuary. Harbour cruises, fishing, 4WD bike safaris, horse trekking, golf and walking tracks are all available.

Akaroa is Canterbury's oldest town and this is recognised with a heritage trail that takes in the town’s highlights. After touring the town, visit Barry's Bay Cheese Factory, or head along the peninsula to visit local wineries. Dine at one of the wineries or a restaurant in Akaroa. Stay the night there or return to Christchurch, just a 90 minute drive away.
