Cheviot, a peaceful stop between Christchurch and Kaikoura, is the centre of the Hurunui region. Cheviot is well-known for its cafes and museum, and makes an ideal place for a peaceful break. Have a picnic in the Cheviot Hills Domain with its exotic English trees - some are close to 140 years old! The trees are beautiful in all seasons, but especially in autumn as the leaves change colour.

Out on the coast, the pounding surf makes a contrast to Cheviot's peaceful forest areas and meandering streams. Travel one hour north and you'll come to Kaikoura, New Zealand's top spot for viewing marine wildlife including majestic whales, dolphins and seals.
