Nathan Hawke, Marketing, Public Relations & Visitor Services Manager of Orana Wildlife Trust shares his top spots for beach cricket.
Okains Bay, Banks Peninsula – An awesome drive from Christchurch and a great spot to visit – especially for Waitangi Day celebrations (delicious hangi!). There's a nice campground and lovely hard sand for any sort of beach sport, especially cricket.
Wainui, opposite Akaroa – A good swimming spot but also a good place to muck about in the sand.
Leithfield Beach – OK, it's not really a beach cricket setting as it’s mainly shingle, but this is an ideal spot for a walk (nice campground nearby) and for a range of beach activities (fishing, boogy boarding, throwing a Frisbee etc).
New Brighton Beach – You can always find space on this beach and it's the perfect place for any beach or water-related activity like wave jumping or boarding with the kids.
Sumner Beach – Close to cafés, cool rocks/tunnels, and a nice swimming beach, Sumner is a great place to smack a ball into the surf!
