"The magic of a Canterbury winter is the reason I relocated from Australia to New Zealand. Snow covered peaks, massive glaciers, the incredible colour of the lakes and so much to do. My Top 5 are just the tip of the iceberg (ha, ha)" - Cher Knights, The Hermitage Hotel, Sales & Marketing
A Warm, Cosy Fire - On those really cold winter afternoons there is nothing like a mulled wine in front of the roaring fire in the Snowline Lounge at Mount Cook. Sitting back in those big leather chairs, toasting marshmallows in the fire and watching the colours of Mount Cook change as the sun goes down is the best way to end the day.
Snow, Snow Everywhere - The Canterbury region receives the most consistent snow season in New Zealand. After a heavy dumping I love to drive up to the Mount John Observatory at Tekapo and take in the 360 degree view over the entire Mackenzie basin – you have never seen so much ‘white’!
My Winter Adrenalin Fix - There are so many places to ski in New Zealand, but you can’t beat skiing on the Tasman Glacier. The powder is always fresh and you feel like you’re the only person in the world.
Relax, Soak & Take in the View - Alpine Springs at Tekapo is a great place to visit following a large snow dump. Lay back in the hot pools, surrounded by snow and look out over the incredibly blue waters of Lake Tekapo – magic!
Tobogganing at The Hermitage - Winter at The Hermitage is an experience not to be missed. The village can be covered in snow for weeks on end, which is perfect for tobogganing. My kids know every track and steep slope around the hotel that they can get a toboggan down. But don’t just let the kids have all the fun!
