Overview

Experience New Zealand native wildlife in their natural habitat - a lush vibrant virtually pest-free forest. Maungatautari is a 3,400 hectare forested ancient volcano encircled with 47km of predator-proof fence. The vision is to remove forever, introduced mammalian pests and predators and restore to the forest a healthy diversity of indigenous plants and animals not seen in our lifetime.

Today you can visit a regenerating Maungatautari and see the following wildlife previously only sighted on pest-free islands; hihi (stitchbirds), robins (pitoitoi), kiwi, kaka, takahe, yellow-crowned Kakariki and Kokopu (fish).

There are two main access points:
Hicks Road, (Northern) has one loop track taking about 1 hour to complete.

Tari Road, (Southern) has several tracks taking about 2 hours including a canopy viewing tower.

For the more adventurous the over the mountain track from Hicks Road to Tari Road, or vice versus takes 5-6 hours, with moderate to difficult gradients.
