NORTH

Long Bay Regional Park

  • Long Bay Coastal Walk (3 hrs return)
    A coastal walk beginning at Long Bay Beach on Auckland's North Shore, taking in beaches, native bush, farmland, an estuary, rock pools and a marine reserve. Follow the arrows and numbered blue posts.
Shakespear Regional Park
Buses to the park run daily from Downtown Auckland.
  • Heritage Trail (1-2hrs return, 3.8km)
    Starts at Waterfall Gully near the duckponds and takes in Maori heritage sites, native forest, spectacular views, farmland and wetland. Follow the yellow markers.
  • Lookout Track (1-1.5hrs return, 2.5km)
    360ยบ views from Auckland city skyline to the islands of the gulf and around to Wenderholm and Mahurangi Regional Parks. Follow the blue markers.
  • Tiri Tiri Track (2-2.5hrs return, 3.8km)
    A walk through a Maori pa site then along the cliffline for stunning views of Tiritiri Matangi. Follow the red markers.
Wenderholm Regional Park
Buses to the park run on selected days from Downtown Auckland.
  • Perimeter Track (1.5-2.5hrs return, 4km)
    A loop track around the headland coastal forest, with steep climbs and descents. Follow the red markers.
  • Couldrey House (20-40mins one way, 1.3km)
    A track to a lookout with spectacular views. Return via the Perimeter track. Follow the yellow markers.
  • Puhoi Track (20-30mins one way)
    A track through open pasture to a lookout platform taking in the Waiwera Valley and Puhoi River. Follow the blue markers.

SOUTH

Auckland Regional Botanic Garden
  • Native Forest Trail
    A signpost from the courtyard leads to two ornamental lakes and plant collections. Guided walks are available for groups from Monday to Friday.

Hunua Falls/Wairoa Regional Parks

  • Cossey Massey Loop (3hrs return, 5km)
    A metalled track which offers long range views, native forest, sparkling water and giant kauri trees.
  • Suspension Bridge Loop (1hr30mins, return, 3.5km)
    Viewing platforms give scenic vistas across Wairoa reservoir and the Hunua Ranges.

Duder Regional Park

  • Farm Loop (1hr 50mins return, 4.3km)
    Some of the best coastal views in Auckland, including several Hauraki Gulf islands. Follow the red markers.
  • Whakakaiwhara Pa Walk (1hr return, 2.4km)
    A branch from the farm loop walk, leading to an unusual triangular pa (fortified village) site at the end of the peninsula. Follow the blue markers.

Awhitu Regional Park

  • Brook Homestead Walk (40mins return, 1.5km)
    A short walk leading to a historic homestead, with a swimming spot at the old wharf. Follow the orange markers.
  • Farm Walk (1hr30mins return, 3km)
    A track taking in two white, sandy beaches and a climb to a viewpoint with stunning views over the Manukau Harbour. Follow the red markers.


WEST


Waitakere Ranges Regional Park - Scenic Drive

  • Arataki Nature Trail (1.25hrs)
    A steep but easy walk with signs explaining features of the forest.
  • Waitakere Dam Walk (30min)
    From the picnic area off Scenic Drive, this walk descends to Waitakere Dam with its spectacular views. A short off-shoot track leads to an ancient kauri tree with a 7m girth.

Waitakere Ranges Regional Park - Piha Road

  • Karekare Falls (10min return)
    A short easy walk to a delightful waterfall near Karekare Beach.
  • Kitekite Track (1.5hrs return, 1.8km)
    A popular walk from Glen Esk Road carpark at Piha leading to these impressive falls.
  • Laird Thompson/Rose Tracks (1hr)
    A combination of these tracks provides a scenic walk from the end of North Piha to secluded Whites Beach.
  • Lion Rock Track (1hr return, 220m)
    A steep walk up the summit of an ancient volcanic peak on North Piha Beach offers fine views.
  • Mercer Bay Loop Walk (1hr return)
    Set off from Te Ahu Ahu Rd carpark and enjoy dramatic coastal views.
  • Tasman Lookout Track (40min return)
    This track ascends the cliffs at the south end of Te Waha Point and offers beautiful views of Piha and Whites Beach.
  • Upper Nihotupu Dam Road (1.5hrs return, 2.1km)
    Native forest with picturesque views and waterfalls along the way.

Waitakere Ranges Regional Park - Huia Road

  • Karamatura Loop Walk
    In the Karamatura Valley near Huia, this hour-long walk takes in bush, streams, waterfalls and rugged hillsides clad in rata forest.
  • Mt Donald McLean Walk (30min return)
    An easy climb rewards visitors with spectacular views over the Waitakere Ranges and Manukau Harbour.

Muriwai Regional Park

  • Muriwai Gannet Colony (Takapu Refuge)
    A scenic boardwalk from the parking area at Muriwai Beach leads to specially built viewing platforms, allowing superb views of the birds. Courtship takes place in September and the young begin to fly between March and April.

Centennial Memorial Park

  • Located in the Waitakere Ranges, this park covers hundreds of hectares and features self-guided nature trails. For more information, visit the Arataki Visitors Centre on Scenic Drive.
